Safe Scalp Micropigmentation Removal in Florida: ReversaTatt

Mention laser removal and the SMP community cowers in fear.  I think part of the fear is due to results from the older technology for tattoo removal and the other part is a financial motive for SMP providers.  Great companies like Scalp Guru would be hesitant to recommend a tattoo removal service because they are the in the business of educating the public on the benefits of SMP and have a fiduciary responsibility to the excellent  SMP providers that they support.  I want to be clear;  I love scalp micropigmentation.  I think it provides the best value and results for men struggling with hair loss.  The caveat though, and always will be, can you look good with a shaved head?  It’s not difficult to go through with a very successful scalp micropigmentation and decide it’s not for you.  That was my situation.  Of course, there are still plenty of awful SMP providers and the victims of these procedures desperately need an SMP technician who can fix poor work or a talented technician who can safely remove the tattoo.

If you want a great SMP provider to assess and correct a poor SMP, I highly recommend Matt Iulo of Scalp Micro USA or Jonathan Gerow, who appears to be self-branded 🙂

Ink Is Cool Until You Regret It

Tattoos, at their best, are the physical embodiments of the most meaningful events, ideas, or connections during a particular stage of life.  Tattoos can be a form of self-expression, creativity or a collection of art.  Sometimes.

They can also be impulsive drunken decisions, a lost bet between friends, an addiction to pain, or a poorly thought-out sign of affection.  Don’t worry, that Limp Bizkit tattoo probably seemed like a good idea at one time in life.

No matter why an individual originally gets inked, that person continues to evolve over time. Eventually, those physical embodiments on their skin may no longer accurately represent how they feel about themselves.  Or, in some cases, the tatts are distracting or well . . . ugly.   So naturally, many people seek to remove tattoos.  And just like how the popularity of tattoos has risen, so has the decision of people to eviscerate those colorful concoctions on their skin.

I’m no different.  Although I didn’t receive a traditional tattoo, I opted to have a scalp micropigmentation procedure in March.  A scalp micropigmentation procedure is where a form of tattoo is applied to the scalp to mimic hair, similar to how women have eyebrows or others forms of permanent make up applied to their faces.  My procedure was fantastic and everyone just thought I had shaved my head, but I decided I liked myself better with hair, even though I have a weak hairline.  So a week ago, I decided to have part of the tattoo removed.

An Optimal Method for Removing Tattoos? 

When scouring the web for the safest and most effective methods for removing my SMP, I drew a few conclusions:  I needed to find a practitioner with considerable experience and positive reviews, and I needed to stick with either a form of Q-Switched or Picosure lasers.  There’s a plethora of crap online debating the merits of Q-switched vs Picosure.  Most companies appear to defend the type of machine they have for their business, which is understandable because these machines are very expensive.   In layman’s terms,  Picosure is the newest technology and emits more energy in shorter durations.  While Q-switched lasers work in the realm of nanoseconds, Picosure lasers work within the realm of picoseconds.  So, Picosure lasers can emit pulses of energy within a trillionth of a second — whoa for science!    This shorter and more controlled burst of energy helps to prevent scarring and damage to the skin.  Furthermore, Picosure lasers cause the tattoo ink to burst into smaller pieces when compared to Q-Switched, which means the immune system will be able to remove more of the tattoo over the following month.  This results in a quicker removal process with fewer sessions needed.

Picosure is criticized for not having enough versatility to deal with the complexity of tattoo colors.  Different colors reside at different depths in the dermis and different wavelengths are needed to penetrate the skin at those different depths.

Additionally, it appears that earlier Picosure machines were not able to customize both the size of the laser and the wavelength.  They were only capable of projecting a 755nm wavelength, which would be insufficient to remove all colors.  Nonetheless, all these complaints seem to be remedied with the Pico+4 machines.  The versatility of different wavelengths and the different handpieces allow for differently sized emissions to be administered.  The machine offers wavelengths at 1064, 532, 585 and 650.  I will still advise anyone reading this to perform their own research and even consult their own dermatologist, but this is a pretty robust machine that appears capable to handle a variety of colors and sizes.

ReversaTatt Experience

When I finally decided to start researching places to remove my SMP, I was expecting to travel to Orlando.  Surprisingly, a company in Jacksonville claimed to have the Pico+4 machine,  along with a very experienced Physician Assistant, Dave, who has removed around 14,000 tattoos and counting.  I sent them a text and they responded instantly with their risk assessment, the probable cost of my procedure, and appointment time.  When I arrived at their Jacksonville location off Gate Parkway, I felt a little uneasy since it appeared like they were renting an office from a chiropractor for the day.  I soon learned they work in several markets and do not have a permanent location in Jacksonville, although they appear to serve the Jacksonville market approximately every two weeks.  Additionally, they don’t require a lot of space for their services.  The other thing that bothered me was their lack of reviews in Jacksonville.  They explained they have only been in the Jacksonville market for a few months and I realized several negative complaints would have surfaced by now if their work was subpar.

They were very quick with my in-person consultation and let me meander in their office for an hour.  After meeting Dave, I wasn’t worried about the outcome of the procedure but struggled to decide if I wanted to really get rid of my SMP procedure.  I went to the best practitioner/artist in the world for my SMP and he really did a great job.  I just couldn’t decide between keeping my SMP or letting my hair grow out for a few more years.

I finally decided to go through with the tattoo removal.  The treatment was over in a matter of seconds.  It did hurt, but it was not unbearable.  They say it feels like rubber bands hitting the skin; I would describe more like millions of little universes exploding inside my skin.  It was more painful than receiving my original tattoo, but I need to stress it was completely bearable and very short in duration.

After the treatment, Dave even reduced my costs from $225 to $170 because my area of treatment was so small.  I left in jubilation of my reduced cost and relief from being finished with the experience.  A day later, I can barely tell my SMP is there.  It will continue to dissipate within the next month.  SMPs, of course, are shallow tattoos so my experience is unique to my situation.
